Core Program
The Eco Coffin Project is a biennial community program that aims to:
- Spark conversations, curiosity and acceptance of our mortality
- Increase our death literacy for informed end-of-life planning
- Use creative practices to become ok with death
- Raise awareness of eco-friendly options like natural burial
- Become more enlivened and grateful for our every day
The program includes 3 full-day workshops in March followed by decorating an eco-coffin or making a shroud during April to July which becomes part of our group exhibition in August for the South Australian Living Arts Festival (SALA). The Eco Coffin Project is made possible thanks to our Sponsors.
We only take 12 bookings per group to ensure everyone is deeply heard. When bookings open they sell out fast. To ensure you are one of the first to know when bookings open please register your interest.
Next Eco Coffin Project is 2025

April-July: DecoratE Eco-Coffins & MakE Shrouds (optional)
Decorate an eco-coffin or make a shroud during April to July. This creative part of the project is done in your home so you can work on your creation when it suits you. We meet regularly online via Zoom to share our progress.
This making-decorating part of the project is optional. We do find that the majority of the group are keen to decorate an eco-coffin or make a shroud and often involve other family and friends in the process.
We supply the Coffin-in-a-box flat pack eco-coffin or a Daisybox eco-cardboard coffin at generously discounted prices for participants, but you are free to source or make your own eco-coffin from scratch if you choose.
AUGUSt: Pushing up daisies exhibition
Our beautiful eco-coffins and shrouds are proudly displayed in the Gawler Civic Centre during all of August along with an official Opening Event as part of the South Australian Living Arts Festival (SALA).
The purpose of this part of the program is to share our learnings and insights with the wider community in this creative way. These powerful personal works of art and love spark questions about sustainable death and raise community awareness of natural burial.
We have also curated an online exhibition with the Artist stories to reach an even wider audience. Enjoy!
Your own artist web page (incl design & hosting) and group entry fee for the South Australian Living Arts Festival are also included in the program price.
