Venue
The venue for our Pushing Up Daisies Exhibition as a group entry in SALA25 this year was generously provided by the wonderful Deb Griffiths at Down To Earth Funerals, 241 Old South Rd, Old Reynella. Each Saturday in August Deb would clear her Funeral Chapel, with help from one of the rostered-on artists, and set up the exhibtion ready for the weekend opening hours in August. Then on Sunday after the exhibtion closed they would carefully pack away the exhibits and re-set Deb’s chapel ready for the working week.
Opening Event
Our Opening Event was a huge booked-out success via free tickets through our invitation on Humantix. It was a free community event with abundant and delicious catering thanks to The Meal Hub and wines generously donated from Bird in Hand and Thunderbird Wines.
Our guests enjoyed a glass of bubbles and yummy finger food with their wander through the Chapel where the exhibits of eco coffins, shrouds and urns were installed, crafted and decorated by this year’s participants in the Eco Coffin Project.
The formal part of the Opening Event was held outside in the sunshine in the courtyard framed by the beautiful blossoms in the garden. Each of the Artists had their turn on the microphone sharing the details of the exhibit, the eco-materials used suitable for natural burial and the meaning that inspired their creative choices. There was even audience participation where guests were invited to wrap and pallbear a shroud. As you can imagine, lots of interesting conversations were sparked about our mortality and sustainable choices we can make when planning for our death and what happens to our bodies.
Exhibits
Each exhibit was explained by an A4 Artist Card, like the one below, that had a QR code that when scanned takes you to the Artist’s page on this website.
On leaving guests were invited to write on our Before I Die board.
Thank you to all our guests who came for the opening, the visitors who came to see the exhibit each weekend during August, our Artists, helpers, caterers, Barbara our photographer, and Deb from Down To Earth Funerals for providing the best venue that brought our exhibition about death to life!
